What is your resistance telling you?
For the last 3 weeks I have been resistant and very reluctant to continue my daily yoga practice.
Resistance is just a message.
Upon inspection I discovered that my resistance was a protection mechanism against messing up and getting it wrong.
A month into my Yoga Teacher Training, I am supposed to be able to lead a person through 5 yoga poses. Having done yoga for many years, I am familiar with the poses but teaching them is another story.
Being terrified of messing up, using the wrong words, stumbling over my words, projecting my voice etc. I just stopped practicing yoga completely.
The fear of messing up was paralyzing. I would actively avoid doing yoga and find other activities to do instead.
Moving forward.
Once the reason behind the resistance was identified, I was able to consciously acknowledge that fear is False Expectation Appearing Real.
My own expectation of being perfect immediately was unrealistic. Practice makes perfect – or it at least makes you better. Logically, how on earth are you supposed to be good at something you have never done before?
The challenge was allowing myself to ‘mess up’ also know as actively learning. Learning what feels right within my body and what comes out of my mouth. What sounds genuine and flows.
I am still actively learning and finding my feet (and appropriate cues) but choosing to practice self-compassion along the way. Thus, allowing the learning process to happen organically.
Letting go of the resistance opens the path to growth and development.
As Ghandi says “Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.”
What message is your resistance trying to tell you? What can you let go of? How can you practice self-compassion? Are you free enough to allow yourself to make ‘mistakes’ (learning experiences)?
