It’s bedtime and you are still not done.
After your full day of dealing with tasks, demands from other people and resolving crises, you have not gotten round to the one thing you wanted to do for yourself.
Life happens, things come up that need your attention. But you are important too. Part of self-care is ensuring that you schedule at least one thing for yourself every day.
The one thing can be different every day. Play, pampering, writing, exercise, eating well are examples of things that you can choose to do with your time.
You are in control and have a choice of how to spend your time. Do you really need to check social media instead of doing a few minutes of exercise? The choice is yours.
Awareness of how you spend your time can be highlighted by putting the words “I choose…” in front of whatever you are doing. For example, I choose to check social media.
Being consciously aware of the choice you have, can assist in making better choices of the precious time you have.
Developing a routine and rewarding yourself afterwards can help reinforce your new routine. The reward need not be extravagant, it can be simple – checking your phone for messages, having a coffee or shower etc.
As of yesterday, Breakfast is my reward for doing my daily yoga practise.
Eat the frog first. Start your day with the most difficult task, get it out the way. You will feel proud for achieving it which releases feel-good hormones. The reward reinforces your courage to conquer the task. Making it easier next time.
Once your routine is established, you may no longer need the reward. It is simply an encouragement for the choice you make.
What is the one thing that you would like to add to your day? I would love to hear from you about this or anything else. Contact me here.
