Edible Expectation

Being a foodie on a mission to find delicious goodies to bake that will satisfy my sweet tooth, I attempted to make gluten and refined sugar-free banana bread over the weekend. Despite following the recipe to the T, it did not rise and ended up being rather stodgy.

Given that the recipe had a five star rating, I thought it would be flop-proof. It is all about expectation.

In recent months, I have come to realise that expectations ruin the present moment.

You have this idea in your head of how things should pan out, only to discover that in the moment, it is absolutely nothing like you expected. You feel disappointed. And depending on what your expectations were, you may even feel like a failure.

The gurus tell you to be in the moment. To be present. To be all there, without judgment or expectation. Although I have read those words often in various forms, it is only now that I am actually starting to understand them.

Eckhart Tolle said that you should accept the present moment as if you had chosen it for yourself. When things are challenging or downright sh!t, why would you want to have chosen that for yourself. I wouldn’t want to choose that.

But sh!t things do happen in life, to you, to me and everyone else. It’s part of life.

Without the pain and challenges, you would not grow. I am sure there are times when you feel that you have learnt and grown enough and now is not the time.

If you look back on your life, some of your most memorable times have been when you overcame adversity. You survived despite all that anguish that you were facing.

What Tolle is saying, roll with the punches. Go with it. Accept that this is where you are in the present moment, without judging or blaming yourself or other people.

It is what it is. Accept it for what it is.

Breathe. If you embrace it, allow yourself to experience whatever comes up for you. What can you learn from the situation? If you resist and fight it, it just causes more angst and discomfort, which aggravates the already unpleasant situation.

Are you brave enough to let go of your expectations regardless of the situation you find yourself in?
