Despite having run for a while with my trusted K9 running partner, I decided to join a friend on their training run. Initially, I was shocked that we did not run for the first minute. How can you not run on a training run? Surely you jump right in and get jogging.
We spend the 1st-minute walking and giving thanks for all sorts of things – for our feet that enable us to walk, the weather, our body that enables us to experience the world – anything and everything that could think of that you were grateful for, no matter how small.
At the end of the run, I was shocked to discover that not only had I run faster and further than I normally would but that I felt better for it.
I am not suggesting that you take up running (but please do if you would like) but rather that a little gratitude goes a L O N G way.
Regardless of the situation or what you want to achieve, it has been scientifically proven that a positive outlook enables you to identify more opportunities. And what I discovered in my own experiment, makes your run better.
If giving thanks as you begin to run can have such a positive impact, imagine the impact it can have on your life if you adopt the habit and practice it as you wake up every morning.
Perhaps start small and give thanks for 3 things that you are grateful for every day. The challenge will be three different things every day. Try it for a week and see how you feel and notice a week later, what is different.
What are you grateful for today?
